The work of affording instruction to the Deaf and Dumb makes rapid headway. A new enterprise, having for its object the religious education of Deaf-Mutes, has been commenced at the small Chapel of the University by Rev. Thomas Gallaudet, of this City. Mr. Gallaudet holds the regular Episcopal service on Sunday morning, and in the afternoon translates into the language of signs, adding such observations as may seem appropriate in view of the condition of the persons in attendance. It is calculated that there are in the City and vicinity, about one hundred educated Deaf-Mutes, for whom this opportunity of religious teaching will be serviceable and timely. It is hoped that a permanent parish may be founded by the labors of Mr. Gallaudet.
